Amboni Caves



Eight kilometers north of the town of Tanga resides a spelunking fertility god who will grant you virility and or a fecund womb in return for offerings – or so tells local wisdom. If you’re not in the market for alternative family planning, the Amboni caves, the home of said diety and most extensive limestone cave system in East Africa may still be of interest to you. Guides can inform you of the local lore and interesting history while also pointing out the protected African violets, the resident troop of colobus monkeys, or some of the local avifauna that live just outside the cave entrance.
The Amboni Caves are the most extensive limestone caves in East Africa. They are located 8 km north of Tanga City in Tanzania off the Tanga-Mombasa road. The caves were formed about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic age. It covers an area of 234 km². According to researchers the area was under water some 20 million years ago. There are altogether ten caves but only one is used for guided tours.

Toten Island

Galanos Hot springs

The Galanos Hot Springs are located few kilometers from Amboni Limestone Caves in Tanga. They were named after Christopher Galanos, a sisal plantation owner. The unique aspect of the springs is the fact that they are hot and sulphurous. There are blue and yellow deposits in the canal, which the sulfur water flowing. There is prevailing belief among locals that the springs have magical arthritis and skin ailments cure.
